Amigo Mobility received Green Business Certification in August 2008 after a lengthy review and on-site audit and inspection. The certification is renewed every two years based on criteria provided by The Institute for Green Business Certification.
We are committed to improving our environmental initiatives every year. Amigo’s current environmental initiatives include:
Reduce
- 80% of our paperwork is sent via email instead of printing a copy and faxing, significantly reducing paper and ink usage.
- Since 2010, a paperless check system is used for the majority of our bills.
- Transportation costs and the effect on the environment is a factor when choosing suppliers. Amigos are manufactured in Michigan with 31% of our vendors from our state and 90% of our vendors within the US.
- Motion sensor light switches were installed in the bathrooms in both plants to reduce energy usage
- Hand dryers replaced paper towel dispensers in the bathrooms, annually saving approximately 23 trees, 2,800 lbs. of solid waste and 27,060 gallons of water.
- Two of our main suppliers moved on site in 2010, greatly reducing transportation costs
- Programmable thermostats were installed throughout the company in 2011, and are estimated to reduce our overall electricity bill by 10%.
Reuse
- Controllers, chargers and other electronics can be rebuilt as eco-friendly and cost efficient alternatives to new replacement parts.
- Amigo products continue to be designed with durability and reusability in mind. For example, the Hall Effect enclosure was introduced in 2009, a part that will last the lifetime of the product. The SmartChair was introduced in 2011, which has a lifespan that is two to three years longer than traditional manual wheelchairs.
- A unique, eco-friendly powder coating process is used on parts. This one-step process uses no harsh chemicals that need to be disposed of. No water or heat is required and no hazardous air pollutants or ozone depletents are produced. This process also seals parts from flash rusting, which extends the life of parts.
- The majority of ValueShoppers are shipped on eco-friendly CHEP pallets. These pallets are reusable and are made of wood from a renewable source, cutting the number of wood pallets used in half.
Recycle
- All products are 100% recyclable and no hazardous waste is created or released into the environment during the production of an Amigo.
- Recyclable plastic is used for packaging, which is easier for the customer to recycle, saving approximately 385,000 sq. ft. of cardboard per year.
- When Amigo receives goods from our suppliers, we save the packaging and recycle it by reusing in the packaging of parts being shipped out.
- Environmental awareness is not just a trend for Amigo Mobility. It has been, and will always be, a priority as we hold a strong regard for our community and its future.
